Increasing storage - what is my easiest path?

Post by jayatnashville »

When I initially set up VirtualBox on my Mac (currently using Lion OS) as the host for XP Pro as the guest I seriously underestimated my storage needs. I set up for 10 gig. And I set it up as Fixed (and not dynamic). I realize I need about 30 gig.

My questions are: Do I need to set up a new machine from scratch?
If so does that mean having to reinstall XP Pro from scratch also?
Can I clone, copy, or backup/then restore my installed programs on the old machine to the new machine?

Specific directions or User Guide references would be greatly appreciated.

VirtualBox has a built-in disk resize function, which unfortunately you can't use because you chose a fixed size disk.

That leaves, as your easiest option, using the CloneVDI tool, and since CloneVDI is a Windows app, you will first have to install Wine/WineBottler. Use CloneVDI to clone the current hard disk, using the "Increase virtual drive size" option to enlarge the drive, and also the "Enlarge partition" option to cause the existing partition to be enlarged to fit the new larger drive.

Note that if you have used snapshots then you must clone the most recent snapshot VDI (in the Snapshots subfolder). Only if you have no snapshots should you clone the base VDI.

the lastest Wine on OS X is WinOnX, available from Mac App Store for a price $4.99
the authors are trying to make it painless and 'foolproof'

This is turning out to be excellent advice. I bought WinOnX and downloaded CloneVDI. After a bit of monkeying around to get the dialogue box to recognize the snapshot I took we're off and running. Will comment on final results and I expect them to be positive! Many thanks gents, I was completely hooped and use the VM exclusively for my business. Mucho appreciato!

I have same problem . keep getting message that i have low disk space, but can't uninstall any programmes ( I only have Anquet mapping,Vbox and 2 Net framework things). so need to increase disk size. I'm not knowledgeable enough to go through the steps mentioned in the previous posts . It took me hours to get Vbox installed and working. so would like to know how to uninstall Windows and VirtualBox from my Mac. I then plan to re purchase the programme I use as it's now available for the mac OS. . I Suppose i could uninstall VBox and/or Windows .is that easy? Do i uninstall one or the other or both .I would like to know the steps involved. Thankyou.
