Can anyone please advise - I clicked the upgrade recommended by virtual box for OS X and the install - at the end of the install it showed the install failed. Is there a way to reverse this?

Just another recent new user here -- but I've seen this before. The updater doesn't always work the first time. You can run it a second time; if that fails, use the uninstaller (it won't remove your VMs). Then install (whichever version you want).
