Ubuntu VB freezes when trying to access Xtion/Kinect openni

I have an Ubuntu Virtual machine running on a Windows 7 host.
I am trying to use the openni libraries in conjunction with ROS (Robot Operating System)
I can connect the camera and see it show up in lsusb but once I attempt to access any data from the camera (Xtion pro) the system locks up. VirtualBox locks up and the only way to kill the program is a hard restart. I assume it may not be a problem with openni but a problem with how VirtualBox is porting the USB device. I found another topic here that had a similar issue but with a web camera.
