VPN connections disconnecting in Ubunto

Virtualbox 4.1.20
Windows 7 32 bit host
Ubuntu 11 client
Any outgoing VPN connection set up in kvpnc on the guest disconnects gracefully between 10s and 5 minutes, no matter what disconnect timeout set.
Connection type can be cisco, pptp etc.
googling reveals a similar problem under vmware, which seems to suggest a vm / networking issue, but with no known resolution.
Anybody any ideas?
