Automatic Updating of Shared Folders/Files

Hi there,
I'm using portable virtual box (v4.1.14) to run Ubuntu 12.04 (x64) in a Windows 7 (x64) machine. I have to run particular scripts in Linux for uni studies, so I do all my script editing etc. in Windows, then run the script in Linux, accessing the file through a shared folder.
I recently upgraded portable virtual box and installed the newer version of Ubuntu (to the details above). I'm finding now that if I change a file in Windows, that change isn't visible within Linux. I have to restart linux in order to access that new/new version of the file. I'm pretty sure that wasn't the case previously.
Anyone know why this is occurring? Is it normal?
Thanks heaps for your help!
