ClearOS on windows, help on network.

Post by j_b_riga »

I install VB on WinXP with 2 nic and instal ClearOS on VB
How configure network to work like this;
nic1 connected to internet thru autoconfig - - (network mode?) - - clearos as external (but only the clearos will use it not shared to WinXP)
nic2 - - (network mode?) - - connected to clearos as LAN
then nic2 will be connected to switch to other PC and the same time WinXP will use this instead of nic1 as access to internet

Any help?

That is pretty simple, but you do most of it in Windows, not in VirtualBox.

Go to the NIC properties in the host OS. For the NIC you want the vm to use, clear all boxes except VirtualBox Bridged Networking Driver. Only the vm will be able to use this NIC. The host OS will not see it.

On the other NIC, clear only the VirtualBox Bridged Networking Driver box. A vm will not be able to use this NIC but the host OS will.

There is a screenshot on my skydrive.

I don't follow what you have said. XP does not see the network connections of the vm. It sees its own network adapters. Do you have two NICs in the host machine? If not, how do you plan to have the host use one of them and the guest use the other?

i did a restart on my pc and then it came up. i have total of 4 nic on WinXP (2 Local area and 2 VM nics)
Another question.
I use clearos as gateway OS on VirtualBox. external nic at clearos at automatic optain IP. the LAN nic set at 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0 but i cant ping 192.168.1.1 form WinXP.

Internet --> Local Area Connection --> VirtualBox Host-Only Network(192.168.100.1 on Bridge Mode) --> ClearOS External
ClearOS LAN(192.168.1.1) --> VirtualBox Host-Only Network #2(192.168.200.1 on Bridge Mode) --> Local Area Connection #2

Do i need to share internet connection from VirtualBox Host-Only Network #2(192.168.200.1) to Local Area Connection #2 so that i can ping ClearOS LAN(192.168.1.1)?
But before that ClearOS cannot connect to internet.

What are you trying to do? This has very little to do with VirtualBox.

Yes, you can run your vm as a firewall/router to protect your host (and other machines on a physical LAN). How you configure it would be a matter for the ClearOS forum, not this one. How you configure the various physical and virtual NICs is not something that can be done in a forum using the limited information you have supplied (but it is certainly possible). The scheme you propose is much too complex.

I will give you a few tips.

The "Public" side of the ClearOS gateway connects to one physical NIC in the host which has access to the Internet (either directly or through another router).

Do not give the host OS access to any NICs which connect to this physical network.

Do not confuse things by trying to use the Host Only adapter. The host and other physical machines use the normal LAN NIC plugged into a switch. They should all be in the same IP subnet and their default gateway is the "private" NIC of the ClearOS gateway router. This should be a different network (ie different switch) from the public network. Only the ClearOS device has two NICs enabled.

Ping is not a reliable way to test network connectivity these days. Many systems block ICMP echo by default.

The network config is pretty simple.

Internet
|
public IP (or private IP from DHCP)
ClearOS
192.168.1.1 dg blank
|
host and other physical machines
192.168.1.x dg 192.168.1.1

The physical machines should all be able to see each other (because they are in the same network and the same IP subnet)and will all have Internet access when you configure ClearOS (because the ClearOS vm is their default gateway).

I assume that these dupes came from our DB server which had some issues.
