Windows 7 4.1.20 Host CPU issue VBoxSV VirtualBox Interface

Post by CyberPine »

I've got an AMD Quad core with 8gb of memory running Windows 7 pro with VirtualBox 4.1.20. There are two Windows 2003 guests. I start them up and every is perfect - they respond very nicely and can go for days with no issues. However after a few days, suddently my desktop starts humming as VBoxSV VirtualBox Interface starts eating 25% CPU with 13 threads for no apparent reason. Oracle VirtualBox Manager will show 24 threads but only bounces from 0% to 13% CPU usage.

If I stop both Guests the issue persist until I stop the VirutalBox service or reboot. Start the guests up again and everything is fine for days.

I look at CPU on both guests and it's at 0% and nothing is going on.

Both have guest extensions installed and have clipboard disabled.

not sure if possibly related, but when guests come up they complain of being a duplicate name on the network and some service does not start. I looked at event logs on the guest and here's what I saw, but note they do not seem to impact the guests in any way.

-NetBT (a message that my router ip did not allow me to register the interface with this ip and name)
- 3 errors on Virtual Machine addition drivers that failed to start because an attached device is not functioning.

It might be a coincidence, but the first time it happened was following an attempt to run a full maleware scan on the host.

Thanks for any help.

Another note. One of the guest is a live web server, the other just an idle test web server.

When I started them up again, VirtualBox Manager shows 25 threads but only 4% cpu. This time no sign of VBoxSV VirtualBox Interface

I had stopped VB by killing the process tree right in Task Manager.

One more note .. I can kill the VirtualBox Interface that is eating up 30% CPU from Task manager and this seems to impact nothing as my guests are still operational and accessable. But if I kill treee processes everything is removed. What is this and why does this keep happening?
