Windows XP on Mac host

Ever since upgrading to Mac OS Mountain Lion and to vbox 4.1.20, Windows seems to start ok but I cannot open anything, neither by clicking on an icon on the desktop, nor via Start menu. All I ever get is the hourglass symbol and no matter how long I wait, nothing happens.
Any suggestions?

Did you install the updated virtualbox extensions before booting and then guest additions after booting?

I installed the updated virtual box extensions, but couldn't do anything about the guest additions, for some unknown reason nothing happens when I click on "guest additions". Normally a window would open that takes me through the installation process. My problem may be related to the guest additions, but I don't know how to upgrade these.

Check the log for a session, see how much memory your host has available, and make sure you are not allocating more RAM to the VM than your host can spare.
You might also get this symptom if one or more virtual disk drives was located on slow (e.g. network) host media.

I have never changed anything in the allocation of RAM and would be surprised if my host suddenly cannot spare them anymore. Also the one VM I have is on the same host (not a network) it's been on since the first time I used it, nothing should have changed in the speed.
In the meantime I decided to de-install the VM and start again from scratch, but although I could install the new VM without any problems, I now cannot install Windows XP in the VM. I always get an error message: Fatal. No bootable medium found. I have played around with the settings but nothing changes this error message. I have also tried to create a ***.cdr file on the computer from my Windows XP disk and changed the setting to virtual CD, but still the same error message pops up.
I then tried to retrieve an older version of the VM from time machine, but now even that old version comes up with the same error message!!!
What am I doing wrong????

Still trying to get Windows XP in the VM working again after it went on strike for some unknown reason since I upgraded to Mac Mountain Lion and VM 4.1.20. I have "resurrected" older VM files from the Time Machine, but either it's telling me that the VM I'm trying to restore (4.1.14) doesn't run on my OS or in leaving the latest version of the VM and restoring just the VM folder I'm getting the following message:
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Windows XP.

Does anybody know how to overcome this dilemma???
