can i get my VM back only from the snapshot VDI?

Post by Ethan »

I lost my base VDI in an accident, but all the other files were kept, and there is one {uuid}.vdi left in my snapshots.

would it be possible to get my VM back only from {uuid}.vdi?

any help would be very appreciate!

No, I'm afraid that snapshot VDIs are useless on their own. Data (the filesystem structures in particular) is scattered across the entire chain, so if you don't have an entire chain then you have nothing. Everything beyond the first missing piece is lost, so in your case you've lost the lot, and the only cure is a backup.

ps. Cross posting is not allowed, hence I have deleted your other post.
