TOR+Virtual Box? how?

I'd like to use an emailer program inside my virtualbox/ubuntu.

I want to protect my ip while sending emails, because receivers can see the " from ip "

I'd really like to add TOR to virtual box, but not a clue how to do it. maybe something to do with the bridged adapters?

I want to protect my ip, not just surfing the web, but I want the virtual box to have many different ips. How do I add TOR to VB? tutorials?

You don't add Tor to virtual box. You add it to the virtual machine, and it is no different from adding Tor to any other OS/machine. It works fine.

It is probably a good idea to use bridged networking so that the host and guest look like two different machines on the same network to the networking software.

Gotcha,

I'd like to use a bridged adapter with TOR, but I really don't know how to configure this stuff.

I have to choose the Name: , Adapter Type: , Promiscuous Mode:

You mean download TOR to the virtual machine?

But, I really don't know the configuration steps. How would I change the whole machines connections to go through TOR?

Is your machine on a local network or does it have a direct connection to the Internet? You can only use bridged mode if your host machine is on a network. If your host is directly connected to the Internet, the default NAT setting is the only choice you have.

Bridged networking simply installs a filter driver so that the vm can use the physical NIC in the host machine. Just select the adapter you want to use from the dropdown list. If you only have one NIC it is pretty simple! Promiscuous mode is an option which you don't need unless you want to run a network sniffer.

Installing Tor in the virtual machine is no different from installing it on any other machine (and has nothing to do with VirtualBox).

OK, sounds good, but I've only used the tor browser or button.

I really don't know the steps to making the entire virtual machine run through TOR.

steps? Do I need to configure anything on my primary computer to help the entire virtual machine work through TOR?

DO I need to edit the network connections inside the virtual machine? In ubuntu I can choose wired/wireless/mobile/vpn/dsl..? Should I some how add the vpn there? Would this change the entire machines ip connection?

Seems like I need something like this--->howtoforgeDOTcom/how-to-set-up-a-tor-middlebox-routing-all-virtualbox-virtual-machine-traffic-over-the-tor-network?goback=%2Egde_3858580_member_118967630

but thats way to complicated for me.

None of that has any relevance to VirtualBox. The only question relevant is can you install Tor in a virtual machine and does it work? The answers are yes and yes. Anything else is relevant to Tor but not to VBox.

Just install it in your vm and see what happens. Have you read the blurb on the Tor download page?

ok, I'll download it inside, but when I download it, I will be downloading Tor bundle/browser.

I don't need a browser, I need the whole OS to work with TOR,

I shall be back with more questions. (: thanks Bill

That are TOR problems, that has nothing to do with VBOX.

With a bridged adapter your Virtual PC is like any other PC in a network.

So ask on the TOR page for TOR problems.

For the matter of fact that here are experts involved I dare to ask about VPN.

Is it technically fine to run a VPN (OpenVPN) in a VM with the idea to increase anonymity on the net?
There are plenty of VPN services out there and imagine you are in China and want to 'get out' without reading/eavesdropping on you
a VPN makes very much sense.

But in my case I need this in my VM!
Installing it in the host is no solution for me since for some stuff I even do not try the corporates that run VPN services and they can of course log and read your stuff...

So, is that possible with bridged/NAT nic?

thankls alot

Yes, you should have no trouble running a VPN client in the guest OS. If your host can make a VPN connection, the client should be able to do the same thing if you can use bridged mode, because the client would look just like another machine on the same local network as the host (as far as the networking software is concerned).

Running a VPN client while in NAT mode may also work. Some VPN connections run well behind NAT, some don't.

Whether it is worth doing or not is another question. If you are on a home network you are already behind a NAT router and using a private IP address which cannot be seen from the Internet. If your host is on a home network and your guest is using the NAT networking option you are behind two NAT routers. But as you noted, VPN traffic is encrypted while crossing the public network.
