Remote VirtualBox on windows8 Host

Post by slow_MO »

have any of you guys tried using windows8 to host a remote connection to a virtual guest? i currently have VirtualBox 4.1.18 installed on my host PC that has Windows8 RTM and an XBMCBuntu 11.0 (Eden) guest. i have the guest fully setup and ready to go, have the guest additions installed everything, its working great locally. however, when i try to connect to the guest remotely via VirtualBox VRDP it fails every time.

i currently have Virtualbox set to listen on port 5090. i tried the default port 3389 and that doesn't work. also tried opening port 5090 on windows8's firewall, still doesn't work. tried setting the guest network from NAT to bridged, still failed. set the host to "allow remote assistance connections to this computer" still doesn't work. tried connecting to the guest while it was still running, nothing.

AFAIK i don't need to install a VRDP sever on the guest, just vBox should do it. i'm not sure what else i can do, can you guys help?

here's info on the machines i'm using:

Host:

cpu: intel corei5 3570K
ram: 16GB DDR3
gfx: Nvidia GTX670 2GB
hd1: 300GB 10K velociraptor
hd2: 700GB WD green
network: wired 1gig
os: windows8 RTM
ip: 192.168.1.5

Remote:

cpu: intel corei5 2450m
ram: 8GB DDR3
gfx: intel HD3000
hd1: 750GB 5.4K
network: wireless N 150mbps
os: kUbuntu 12.04
ip: 192.168.1.2

BTW, here's the terminal cmd i use to connect to my vBox: rdesktop 192.168.1.5:5090

Windows 8 is not yet released, never mind supported by VirtualBox. Until that changes we are trying the manage the space wasted by eternal repetition of experiences to just two threads, one for Win8 guests, the other for Win8 hosts. The host thread is here.
