No network adapters present in guest OS (other than lo)

Very curious problem I'm having. After installing virtual box & adding a guest OS (OEL 6.3) when I boot up the guest OS there are no interfaces present other than loopback. The guest OS is known to work for others - but I have no luck with it myself.

I've tried multiple different virtual networking settings - including bridged, NAT, host-only and it has the same issues every time.

host OS ubuntu 12.04
host interfaces:
eth1 = 10.1.1.1
vboxnet0 = 10.1.1.3
wlan0 = 192.168.2.110

vbox settings:
version:4.1.18 r78361
adapter1 = enabled, attached to: Bridged adapter (eth1)
adapter2 = enabled, attached to: hostonly adapter (vboxnet0)
all other network settings are default.

When I bring up the guest OS the only interface listed in the guest is lo:

when I run ifconfig there is no listing of any eth* drivers at all.

Any thoughts?

More than likely a different eth* and it is not up.
Edit the /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules or you can delete the rules and Linux will configure it on the next boot
Then investigate how to use ifconfig to up specific adapters if the second adapter is not showing in the ifconfig
