No host-only DHCP... is that normal? - Answered

When I create a host-only adapter (File > Preferences > "VirtualBox - Settings": Network [+] icon) the resulting adapter does not have DHCP enabled. Is this normal behavior? Thanks in advance.

Answer (Thanks, Perry!):
When creating a host-only adapter for the 1st time, DHCP is enabled by default.
Thereafter (whether creating a 2nd host-only adapter or recreating a host-only adapter that you have removed), DHCP is disabled by default and has to be enabled and configured by hand.

Yes as by default the host-only adapter has dhcp on install. Adding one and enabling another dhcp server would cause a conflict on the network.

I don't understand. Are you saying that DHCP is off by default or on by default?

It's on by default only when you first install VirtualBox. After that you must turn it on yourself when creating. The reason why is to prevent another dhcp server being created which could cause issues on your LAN.

You can actually create multiple host-only networks, but I usually do not enable the dhcp server on systems that I have more than one host-only adapter and use static addresses only to prevent any conflicts on the network.

Thank you, Perry. I noticed a difference and was confused by it. Your clarification helped.
