I have a number of different Fedora 17 guests running on a range of hosts (F17 386 and 64, Mac OSX). All seem to be having problems properly starting X desktop sessions since the update to 3.5 kernel (I think one was also failing on 3.4.6-2, the others skipped that kernel). Those on F17 hosts fail completely, asking me to contact an administrator, while the OSX one brings up that screen, but also brings up the login screen, which works properly. It's not causing me a problem, I'm just reverting to earlier kernels, and I'm hoping that it might be fixed in 4.2 which I saw is now in beta; I'm just reporting it here because I don't see any other thread mentioning it. Let me know if I should file a ticket on it.

I have the same problem with linux 3.5.0-2 but not earlier kernels. Attaching vboxadd-install.log.

Problem occurs with Virtual Box 4.1.12 through 4.2.0 beta 1, on Mac OS X 10.7.4. as host.

Getting the same error on Windows 7 host, Fedora 17 guests. As soon as I did a yum update and got the 3.5 kernel, the guest additions broke and would not build, with the same error as murphyc wrote above

please use the additions 4.2.0_Beta1 and your Problem is solved.

@manfred - thanks, indeed it did solve the problem, and guest additions were able to build on Fedora with the 3.5 kernel.

The just released 4.1.20 works for me (except for corrupting the kernel-devel package, but that was already happening, see https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/10709#comment:11 ).
