How to update guest additions

Post by jvsrvcs »

With my VM displayed (Win XP Pro x86), I see a tray icon with the virtual box logo with a star in it. Hovering I see "4.1.2r7xxxxx". I am on Virtual Box 4.1.18, and suppose there are updates to the guest additions. How do I upgrade the guest additions on my VM?

It would be nice if it simply upgraded for me each time I upgrade Virtual Box or if I could right click and select 'update' or there were some other instructions. If there is a way to easily do this, please let me know. I have forgotten completely how I got the guest additions there in the first place.

While the vm is running, Click on the "Devices" tab and select "Install Guest Additions".

The procedure BillG decribes causes the guest additions ISO to be attached to the VM. Autorun does the rest. Try to remember to unmount the ISO afterwards.

PS, Autorun is a potential attact vector for viruses/trojans/spyware and hackers, please don't rely on it and turn it off if you have it enabled.
