win server 2008 on win 7 host: windows networking with NAT?

Hi Folks,
I just installed a Win Server 2008 R2 instance on my virtualbox 4.1.18 running on a Win 7 Pro x64 host. I have SQL Server 2012 running on the VM, and would like my host to be able to see my guest via windows networking. Right now it's set up as a NAT connection, which is best for me at the moment as my work connection restricts the MACs that are able to register on the network. Should my host be able to see my VM when the VM is connected via NAT? Or, must I use bridged? Right now they can't see each other, for some reason.
thanks!
alex
