The process of creating a new virtual machine proceeds normally until the Win98 GUI installation screen appears with mouse available for a selection. The installation crashes as soon as the mouse is moved. The following is the error displayed:

Standard Mode: Fault outside of MS-DOS Extender.
EC=0000 CS=0B17 IP=0B71 AX=B236 BX=3465 CX=0FE7 DX=0000
SI=0000 DI=0081 BP=8674 DS=0B47 ES=0FE7 SS=0B47 SP=866E

I cannot figure out the reason for this crash. I installed WIn98 once before, however i never had any problem. The only thing i changed recently: i installed Guest Addition for WinXP vm. I doubt that this has anything to do with error.

Please help.

I believe this will apply to Win98 as well. Windows 2000 installation failures

I don't...

Windows 95 and Windows 98 before SE has all sorts of problems on "fast" CPUs (where "fast" is anything over 300-600 MHz). Partially random crashes are a typical symptoms - partially random in that the crash will occur at the same place, but not all the time.

Turning off hardware virtualization can work around these problems if it sufficiently slows down the guest.

Hmm. I've never had any problem installing Win98 on fast hardware. I'd be more inclined to believe that the wrong mouse driver may have been selected.

Actually yes, Windows 98 SE should be fine. Plain Windows 98, maybe fine and maybe not. Windows 95, tons of problems for sure.
