Can't get Windows 7 to access internet on OSX host

Post by SwiftRob »

Hi there,

I've trawled the net and spent about 4 days part time on this but have given in and am asking here.

I have:
- OSX Mountain Lion (this issue was the same on Lion) as host
- VirtualBox 4.1.18 running on OSX host
- Windows 7 Home Professional (Guest)

Running on a:
- Macbook Air (late 2011 model)
- 4Gig RAM
- 128Gig SSD

I can't access internet on the Windows Guest via any sources. Ping, Web, etc.

I have the virtual machine set to NAT but have also tried Bridge and seemingly every other combination. I'm a bit lost to be honest. I'm also a bit desperate with a looming deadline, hence my post.

Here is an ipconfig /all

If the host has internet access then using NAT should be easiest, and sufficient for simple browsing. Bridged will also work and provide full access, but only if there's a router available to hand out IP addresses.

In the meantime you might want to disable all but one of the network adapters in the guest, and/or clarify which of these was the one you were setting to NAT/bridged etc.

Thank you so much for the reply.

I put all the adaptors back to how they were (only 1 adaptor with NAT). The Host has internet yes (typing on it here).

This is the ipconfig /all now if that helps? I'm totally at a loss..

Thanks again, it's really appreciated.

DNS does not look correct Try this (on the host) in a terminal. (make sure guest is shut down (not saved state) and that the VirtualBox main manager is shut down as well.

Code: Select all

VBoxManage modifyvm "VM name" --natdnshostresolver1 on
Replace the "VM name" with the name of your guest and don't forget the quotes " "

The above command is per VM. If you want to set this globally use the following in a host terminal.

Code: Select all

VBoxManage setextradata global natdnshostresolver1 on
Backup your VirtualBox.xml and the guests control file first in case you make a mistake.

Thanks so much.

I ran the command using "Windows 7" (the name of my virtual box). Terminal sat for a bit (doing its thing I'd say) then returned to the command line.

I then started it all up again and same result. This is the ipconfig /all now:

Ok so can you access the Internet now?
If not then I would look at something blocking your access.
Can you ping yahoo.com from the guest?

ahhhh ok, now that's an improvement.

To be clearer:

I couldn't ping any sites
I couldn't browse the web

I then followed the above instructions

I can now ping websites
I still can't browse the web.

Getting close, thank you :) what do you suggest now? I really am at the end of my current knowlege on this kind of thing.

Thanks SO much..

Then you still have DNS issues.
Run these commands in order, one at a time with everything shut off' Then start up and see if you can access the Internet.

Code: Select all

VBoxManage setextradata "VM name" natdnshostresolver1 off

Code: Select all

VBoxManage modifyvm "VM name" --natdnsproxy1 on

Host firewall or virus software?
Something must be blocking your guest.

unfortunately no. No firewall (windows one also turned off), no virus software. Just a pretty clean install with only CCleaner and Quickbooks on it.

I'm afraid I am at a loss as to why.
Do you have a router in your LAN? If so then try Bridged mode.

It's a wifi connection. It's ok thank you SO much for your help. I can't express enough gratitude. You've obviously got me through any issues that VB was having and I'm really grateful for that. The rest I'll fumble through. Much appreciated for all the time you just put in.
