Windows XP - no network adapter

I just installed VB 4.1 on my Mac (SnowLep) ... I created a guest Windows XP system. I left the defaut NAT connection up... But there are no hardware adapters under XP??
That make sense?
From the video's I watched, it appears the XP should install with the "Local Area" and other network adapters in the network window...

If you used the XP template to create a VM then the hardware recipe will have included a PCnet-FAST III (Am79C973) NIC, which kosher XP installs have native drivers for. And NAT networking. As far as I know there is nothing you could have done to prevent XP installing the proper driver when the hardware was discovered. Where did your XP setup CD come from?

I have an XP install disk that I build (via the MSDN) that includes SP3 already -- that way, you get all the patches up to SP3 when you do the install.
(I tried to include a screen-shot of my guest XP session with the network windows up -- and empty, but I haven't been a member for 24 hrs yet, so no links in msgs).
Is there any what I can install the drive after the fact?

As mpack said, if the adapter is present, XP will install the driver automatically.
While the vm is shut down, go to the VirtualBox management screen and look at the settings of your XP vm. Does it show an adapter in the network section. If so which one is it? If it doesn't, can you add one?

This will tell us a lot also.
From the hosts terminal type VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use " " if the name has a space in it.

Adapter 1:

In the network section ... I had it configured as NAT previously, but I have NO connectivity in the XP VM ... and when I open the VM (XP's) network connections window -- this is all I see:

I don't believe that XP has default drivers for the Intel/pro 1000 Nic.
Make sure the guest is shut down (not saved state) and change it to AMD PCNet FAST III (Am79C973, the default)
Boot the guest and see if it picks up the change and loads the drivers.

I think my problem is on the XP install -- no network drivers ... I goto the network connections window in XP, and I got nothing... Trying to add an "advanced connection" -- where you specify the hardward/port you wanna use -- I only see the following...
The 'incoming connection' icon you see will dissapear since I don't want to connect via and LP port!

That's because it does not see a network adapter that it has drivers for. Change the adapter in the settings and then boot the guest. You may (if it is not detected on boot) need to go to the device manager and tell it to scan for changes.

Thanks guys... it was my XP install!
I didn't have a intel NIC card driver installed ... so I downloaded one from the intel site, moved it to the VM shared folder, installed it... and now the NAT connection WORKS FINE:
Soon as the NIC card driver was installed, I opened up the network connections window in the VM/XP and it showed a LOCAL CONNECTION -- connected.

Glad you got it going. It would have been easier to simply change the virtual NIC in the virtual machine to one which had a driver available in XP. It would have worked first off if you had the PCNet FAST III selected (which is why VIrtualBox uses that card if you tell it you are installing XP).

VirtualBox 4.3.26 on MB Pro Retina macbookpro4,1 with MacOS 10.9.5.
WinXP 32bit SP3 installed but Network Driver reported as ? and not detected, driver not installed.
Download this: downloadcenter . intel . com/download/18717/Network-Adapter-Drivers-for-Windows-XP-Final-Release
(32bit or 64bit versions)
Use shared folder so WinXP can read downloads folder from Mac.
Driver installed.
VBox configured as Network NAT, ready.
(Oracle guys don't allow me to post a link since it is my first day in this forum. They're not so brilliant also?)

Honest to the gods question: why on earth do you guys insist on jumping through a gazillion of hoops to install the Intel network card, when is has been made crystal clear that the PCnet-FAST III, which is the default, works right out of the box!!!
To other new users coming to read this. Do NOT install the Intel network card. Stick with the defaults!

Or at least engage your brain, set up both PCnet and E1000, use the PCnet to download the drivers, then disable it when the E1000 works.
But it's very impressive to see the hoops some people are willing to jump through in order to gain approximately nothing
