Files created from Windows sometimes cannot be read

Guest OS is Ubuntu 11.04
Host OS is Windows 7 x64 Ultimate
VirtualBox 4.1.18 r78361

Sometimes I get files that cannot be accessed when creating files from the Host OS within a shared folder. For example, when doing a `ls` within that directory, I will get

Code: Select all

ls: cannot access Gemfile: No such file or directory
ls: cannot access script: No such file or directory
app config config.ru db doc Gemfile Gemfile.lock lib log public Rakefile README.rdoc script tmp vendor
It only happens sometimes and I cannot reproduce it reliably. If I rename the problem file to something else on Windows, it can be read again. If I rename it back to the original filename on Windows, I get the same error.

How I get past this problem is I have to first rename the file to something else on Windows, and then from within Ubuntu rename it back to the original filename. Has anyone seen this problem?

Post an example of the names you are using.

The examples are

Code: Select all

sign_up_controller.rb
landing_controller.rb
I also noticed that if I restart the VM (remounting the shared folder), the files can be read again.

Are you using auto-mount or do you use manual mount with an addition to the /etc/rc.local to mount on boot?
I find auto-mount usually causes this is why I ask.
I use the following and do not have share issues

Code: Select all

sudo mount -t vboxsf -o rw,uid=xxxx,gid=xxxx <share name> <mount point>
replace xxxx with your uid/gid numbers

I'm using vagrant, which is manually mounting everytime I start the VirtualBox VM.

I have no idea how to tell you to proceed since I don't use it, but the non-optimal settings would be where I would start.

Looks like this is the bug I'm experiencing! https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/9887

Which should be fixed in 4.1.18 - did you perhaps forget to update the Guest Additions inside the VM?

Yep, had to update guest additions as well :)
