Win XP guest fails to boot, reboots my host.

Post by Joebob »

Host: OpenSUSE 12.1 64-bit
Guest: Windows XP SP3 32-bit
Virtualbox 4.1.4-3.2.3-x86_64

I recently upgraded my computer to dual boot Win7 64-bit and OpenSUSE. I transferred the old IDE HD contents (with Win XP 32-bit) to an image, then the image to a VDI using the Migrate_Windows howto in the VirtualBox wiki (I can't post URLs yet). I ran into a problem on step 8. After enabling IO APIC, I booted into Safe Mode, and before it finished booting, it rebooted my host without warning. I get the same problem when trying to reinstall Windows to the guest from the XP CD - it begins loading when I boot from it after starting the virtual machine, and then the host is rebooted without warning. The VDI is on my NTFS partition, there is full read-write access to it (I intend to use the 32-bit XP whether I am in Win7 or Linux). What would cause this and how to fix it? I would like to use the image I made if at all possible.

It sounds like you may have a bad RAM problem on your host. I would run tests for that if I was you.
