A bit more information would help. What OS is running on the host? What OS are you installing in the guest? What network card have you selected in the guest (or have you left it at the default)?
Normally when you install an OS into the guest, VirtualBox will select a network card which has a network card driver available in the OS. The OS installation then automatically installs the driver for you. Have you trird to use a particular network card in the vm?

I am facing the same issue:
OS running on the host:
C:\Users\lbenea>ver
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601] (Win7 64bit)
Guest os: WinXP
Tried bridged and nonting appears as available.
Hardware is a Toshiba Portege
VirtualBox is 4.1.18 r78361
Tried reinstaling the guest os and removing the network R830.
Any other ideas what I could try out. Had the same issue with VMware but there they have on the suport forum a 15 step list of things to try before asking for suport and in the end it worked.
Thanks again for the help on the subject.
