Opening VM made on amd machine on an intel machine

Post by thof »

Hi,

I have been sent a vmdk with a number of machine definition snapshots. I am able to create a new virtual machine using the vmdk successfully. However, when I add the .vbox and try and restore one of these snapshots I get the following error:

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Test

cpum#1: X86_CPUID_AMD_FEATURE_ECX_CR8L is not supported by the host but has already been exposed by the guest [ver = 12 pass = final] (VERR_SSM_LOAD_CPUID_MISMATCH)

Can anyone help? Thanks in advance

Snapshots are not easily portable, particularly across different VM platforms. And incidentally: snapshots should not be confused with saved states (some of your terminology seemed to assume that the two terms were equivalent, e.g. in the assumption that the processor mfr is an issue).

Get your colleague to export the VM as an appliance, or even better (IMHO) as a flattened VMDK.

Thanks for the advice. I'll do that.

Sorry for the terrible terminology, I've never done any proper work with VMs
