Windows 7 Enterprise blank screen on Lion?

I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit on VIrtualbox 4.1.18 r78361 on an OSX Lion host 10.7.4 (Macbook Air 11") . After the lastest windows security update, the machine boots to the login screen fine, but then after typing in my domain ID/password, it says "preparing your desktop" and then gives me a completely black screen. I was able to restore to an earlier restore point, and saved a snapshot, and it booted with that, but reinstalling the security patches causes exactly the same problem to occur again.
I tried a couple of variants on installing some of the security patches, but whichever ones I install it seems to put the machine into "blank" mode after login. Even the most innocuous sounding of them, (the one that supposed to change the browser selection allowed for european windows, which I'm not) causes it to break.
It seems to be related to the "preparing your desktop" phase. The screen is black, but I can still use HOST-Delete to bring up the switch windows screen or log out. I've tried both local users and my AD domain account. If I try to bring up the Task Manager from that window, it just goes blank again. The mouse cursor is there and moves around, but clicking does nothing.
I've tried switching to full-screen or windowed modes to no avail.
It doesn't matter if video is has 3d or 2d acceleration enabled.
I am able to boot to safe mode, but I'm limited to XGA resolution in a window (yuck).
