I've searched on Google and through this forum but haven't spotted anything quite the same or if I have the fixes haven't worked. I have a host which is Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. I have installed VirtualBox 4.1.18 and the same version extension pack.
The problem is VirtualBox cannot see any USB device I plug in apart from my mouse.

C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox>VBoxManage.exe list extpacks
Extension Packs: 1
Pack no. 0: Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack
Version: 4.1.18
Revision: 78361
Description: USB 2.0 Host Controller, VirtualBox RDP, PXE ROM with E1000 support.
VRDE Module: VBoxVRDP
Usable: true
Why unusable:

C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox>VBoxManage.exe list usbhost
Host USB Devices:

UUID: 3a341b21-b9f8-4b33-9c0a-bca8df464436
VendorId: 0x045e (045E)
ProductId: 0x0047 (0047)
Revision: 3.0 (0300)
Manufacturer: Microsoft
Product: Microsoft 5-Button Mouse with IntelliEye(TM)
Address: {745a17a0-74d3-11d0-b6fe-00a0c90f57da}\0006
Current State: Busy

C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox>

However I have a usb drive attached and Windows can see it and access files on it.
C:\Windows\system32>diskpart

Microsoft DiskPart version 6.1.7601
Copyright (C) 1999-2008 Microsoft Corporation.
On computer: EDMUND

DISKPART> list disk

Disk ### Status Size Free Dyn Gpt
-------- ------------- ------- ------- --- ---
Disk 0 Online 1863 GB 863 GB
Disk 1 Online 1863 GB 1863 GB
Disk 2 Online 15 GB 0 B

DISKPART>

This was the only way I know to show it is there in text! The 15GB disk2 is a Kingston Data Traveller USB drive.

Any help would be appreciated.

Found what was wrong and am posting this in case any one else trips over this while VirtualBox catches up with newer technology.

My PC is very new and has a mix of USB3.0 and USB2.0 ports. Only remembered that my PC has USB3.0 early this morning over breakfast. The easiest to get to when sat at my desk happen to be the USB3.0 ports. Looks like VirtualBox does not yet cope with USB3.0 as when I crawl about under the desk and plug into a USB2.0 port VirtualBox can see my usb drive. I've now got a USB extension cable plugged in so I can get to a 2.0 connection easily.

Hope this helps someone.

Thanks for the information, though it is somewhat confusing. I would expect VirtualBox not to care about the port, only about the device plugged in - after all, VirtualBox isn't using the port, the host OS is. All VBox does is install a redirection filter on top of the filter stack - surely USB3 and USB2 aren't supported by separate filter stacks?

Rhetorical questions by the way. Not necessarily expecting an answer - unless someone knows for sure.

I had a similar problem with a USB to serial converter that worked fine on my old 32-bit laptop running Win 7. Moved to a 64-bit laptop with USB 3 and it wouldn't work. I was able to disable the USB 3 functionality and now it works.

I'm still having problems with USB disks. Vbox captures them OK, but when I try to mount one, Linux says it can't mount the device and I'm still puzzling over that one.

On the USB disks matter, you could try locating a shared folder on the disk, and bypass the USB issue.
