Changing eth1's IP address

Hello,
when I start Centos in my VirtualBox VM, and type ifconfig, several interfaces appear:
- eth1
- lo
- virbr0
How are those interfaces created?
Can I make the IP address associated with eth1 static and, if so, how?
I have created an ifcfg-eth1 file in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts and defined a static IP address in it, but to no avail.
What is the recommended way to change eth1's IP address?
Many thanks.
