Vista Install Error - Cannot open D:\Sources\Install.wim

Post by RayHaque »

Hello all,

I had created a VirtualBox for my copy of Windows Vista Business Ultimate some time ago under an earlier version of 1.5.x (I think it was 1.5.2). Now I am running 1.5.6. I decided to scrap my original installation after having harmed it during testing, and wanted to get a clean slate.

For some reason now when I try to run through the installation process I get to the point right after I enter the product key, and I get this message ...

"Windows cannot open the required file D:\Sources\Install.wim. Make sure all files required for the installation are available, and restart the installation. Error Code: 0x8007000D".

I am using the same product disc I used for the original installation ... and I am booting from the disc okay as I made it into the first stages of installation. I have also tried creating an ISO image of the disc, and booting from that. I get to the same point, and same error message.

Has anyone else seen this?

I figured out the trick.

When you mount the host drive in the virtualbox settings - you need to check "Enable Passthrough". Now I am installing just fine.

For ISO image it is not necessary to tick, chabo. But if you do experience the OP, it has something to do with your ISO file being corrupted (probably when you downloaded or mounted it). To check if it is corrupted, compare the file size from the download site.

Now just to add, for some reason I experienced the original post and ticking the Passthrough in Storage will not fix it either (used DVD).
But I managed to make it work when I lowered the Virtual Size.

Initially I had 20 GB when installing Win 7 SP1 It said that the minimum should be 26+ upon installation, so I increased it to 30GB. Then the original Post happened.
I just reverted it to 20GB to get it working. Was able to install.

@JR Lopez
Thanks for the suggestions, but after 8 1/2 years it may not still apply.
