Tried installing xubuntu 12.10 alpha from the daily build. I had it installed previously but they have switched to the 3.5 kernel. The headers are there.
any thoughts?

Do the headers match your running kernel?

well they say they do. the problem seems to be there are two images...
linux-image-3.5.0-1 generic
linux-image-extra-3.5.0-1-generic
the headers are linux-headers-3.5.0-1-generic
there are no "extra" headers but when I type uname -r it just says linux-image-3.5.0-1 generic

What happens if you boot to the kernel that matches you headers?

well, there doesn't seem to be a way for me to do that. plus if I try removing the "extra" image it wants to uninstall linux-image-generic and I no longer have a working mouse etc.

I just installed their non-free 4.1.6 additions and they seem to work.

Sounds like a catch 22. Wonder what Ubuntu or maybe Xubuntu is trying to do?
If this just came out it is possible that they have not uploaded the headers yet. I would ask the source what is going on.

this is an answer I received over at the Ubuntu forums...
"The "extra" package is not a separate variant of the kernel. It's a package that contains the majority of kernel modules (eg. including device drivers) that are required on a typical desktop PC.
Virtual machines, due to their limited and semi-standardised virtual hardware, don't require this "extra" package."
wasn't exactly helpful.

Yeah just some way to say nothing. Did they tell you how to be able to compile external kernel drivers/modules then?

I have Ubuntu 12.10 working fine so I will try to see what the heck is going on.

thanks Perry. like I said, I did manage to get their 4.1.6 additions installed. I did have Xubuntu 12.10 alpha installed as a guest previously but that was with the 3.4 kernel I believe and I didn't have this issue.

okay, a couple things. I decided to install today's daily build of Ubuntu 12.10. I ran into the same problem. However just like Xubuntu 12.10 I installed the guest additions from their repos and they work fine. It turns out btw the Xubuntu additions were 4.1.8 not 4.1.6. I just read it wrong.
