Virtualization, vt-d and intel K processor

Post by kproc »

Hi,

I read the K processors don't have the whole virtualization stuff the non-k version has; especially vt-d: "An input/output memory management unit (IOMMU) enables guest virtual machines to directly use peripheral devices, such as Ethernet, accelerated graphics cards, and hard-drive controllers, through DMA and interrupt remapping. This is sometimes called PCI passthrough". wikipedia: X86_virtualization

So I wondered if anyone might share some experience on how d3 or other games behave when running in virtualbox with a K processor like the i5-3570k.
What are the negative points of not having vd-d available? As said I plan to run a linux and a windows in vbox, the windows maybe with games. Does this mean vbox wouldn't be able to use the graphics card?
And another thing; do I have to get a special mainboard if I would want to use this or can any ivybridge handle this?

Thanks

You will not notice the lack of VT-d. It's really VT-x that VirtualBox wants, and even that only if you want to run 64bit guests (or Win8).

VMs are not recommended for video gaming. IMHO: investigate dual boot if you want to do that.

Well I don't like dualboot and thus would like to know if anyone has experience with running for example diablo3 (or other newer games) in virtualbox (or vmware, if I'm allowed to ask this here). (d3 doesn't let you start the games two times, so you need vbox to run it two times) Does it work or will it just be like 2 fps?

Thanks =)
