... and in any case are not (virtual) USB devices.
The rest of your comments (in fact, the above too) seem to be standard USB troubles, which you can find discussed ad nauseum if you Google search "USB site:forums.virtualbox.org". Also read the user manual. Make sure that you know about USB device filters, which I don't see mentioned in your "steps".

Thanks for the quick reply! Believe me, I know...I've read thru forums and manual "ad nauseum". I did add a USB device filter (the first 3 'steps') as well all the solutions that seem to have fixed other ppl's issues: extension pack, adding vboxusers group, etc.
Any other ideas?

sudo usermod -a -G vboxusers root
This suggests that you are running the Mac as root, are you? If this is the case root does not need to be in the vboxusers group. The group is to be able to allow the normal user root enabled access.
Did you install VirtualBox as root or as you elevated to root?
Post the results of id (with your normal login) in a terminal.

I realize that this thread is dated, but I have the same problem with the same Ralink device. I cannot get my host (Mac OS X 10.7.5) to release the dongle to the guest, and I can't get my guest (Kali Linux 1.03) or the host to recognize it if I plug it in when the guest is already running. The dongle *claims* to support Kali:
Panda Ultra Wifi (b/g/n) 150Mbps Wireless-N 2.4GHz USB Adapter - Windows XP/Vista/7/8, Mac OS X 10.6/10.7/10.8, Mint 14/15, Ubuntu 12.04/12.10/13.04, Fedora 17/18, openSUSE 12.1/12.2/12.3, Puppy 5.3.3, Lubuntu 12.10/13.04, Kubuntu 12.04/12.10/13.04, BackTrack5 R3, Kali Linux 1.0.3, Raspbrian Wheezy and OpenELEC Compatible
I've had success in the past with Virtual Box USB support, but this is my first attempt with this device. Also it isn't only the Kali Linux guest that won't grab the dongle, I have a Windows 7 guest that generates the same error:
Failed to attach the USB device Ralink 802.11 n WLAN [0101] to the virtual machine Windows 7 Pro x 64.
USB device 'Ralink 802.11 n WLAN' with UUID {2e14eafd-90a4-44d1-b95a-e1b23aaca3d8} is in use by someone else.

Did the original poster ever resolve this issue? If so, how?
I'm running version 4.2.16 with the extension pack.
Update: For all those of you losing sleep over this, you can relax knowing that I've solved the problem. I swapped out the Ralink with an Edimax Wireless Nano USB Adapter and all works as expected. Looks like the Ralink isn't compatible.

Ralink 3070 working here.
Uninstall any Ralink drivers on your MAC and that's it.
Also some USB cables may cause problems.
Cheers.

Remove this kernel extention from /System/Library/Extentions :
RT73USBWirelessDriver.kext
Restart your Mac. It won't be able to do anything with the D-Link device and VirtualBox will handle it fine.

I know this is an old thread but this took me forever to figure out.
I tried everything to get it to work, however, it continued saying the USB was in use. As soon as I deleted the RT73USBWirelessDriver.kext it worked perfectly.
If you've tried everything and it still doesn't work, follow roro12's advice.
-> I decided to create an account to help anyone else experiencing this problem. Cheers

Thanks for your contribution.
OTOH, I think that six years is a bit dated for a discussion like this. Locking it. Open a new topic if you need to have this discussion relating to current VirtualBox versions.
