You can turn it on but don't try to turn it off. You really don't need it unless you intend to use SMP. Either way it should work as long as you have VT-x enabled, *but* you can not easily change it after install.

ANyway, I intend to play MediaMonkey and some other light-demand software, my OS is Linux, the widow is just for ... what can't be used in Linux or on my hackintosh

Al'right .... I've installed a clean XP SP3, nothing else
Except for the guest package
Except for a couple of security update from widow update

It works just fine ...

Does that means I have to forget about using my Kaspersky because of VB not being able to handle it ?

So before you add or change anything else copy the entire folder that has this guest to a backup location. That way you can get back to this point if you loose it along the way. As for the virus software it has issues with Virtual Guests. There are others that do work properly with Virtual Guests including MS security essential.

Looks like the SATA controller doesn't like me neither ?

I switched my main v-hardrive back to IDE PATA ctroler (since the install was on this setup), only my SWAP and TEMP v-drives are SATA.
Maybe it's just a mater of v-driver ?

All drives are SSD => seams to be fine

widow update keeps runing

Still no Kasper, but I've emailed them for support (that's what I'm paying for, after all)

There are no native support SATA drivers for Windows XP. You need to obtain them and install in the XP guest then switch after the drivers are installed.

OK, I used the wrong version of XP.
Should have used the newer version, the one with SATA drivers integrated.

Now that I'm trying to update widow adding fingerprint reader and SATA driver, it hangs ....

AFAIK there is no such animal. While some OEMs may have bundled special drivers, the generic MS product AFAIK never had it - right up to SP3.

Of course, experiences can be misleading too: just because you know of a generic XP install on a physical SATA PC does not mean that XP is actually using SATA. That's because most modern PCs BIOSes include an IDE emulation mode as a layer on top of SATA, specifically to allow installation of a generic XP. Of course VirtualBox does not include an IDE-on-SATA emulation because you can choose IDE or SATA directly.

Except for the Qty of drive possibility, what adventage do I have using the SATA controller instead of the PATA ?
Does VB actually "see" the difference, same as for ticking the SSD option, does that make a difference in VB ?

Maybe it is because of SATA, after all, not because of Kaspersky .... I will have to install the guest on PATA and then install Kaspersky to make sure of it.

According to VB book, SATA vs. PATA seams to be only a matter of "allowing an existing installation to be virtualized without change"

That includes IDE, SCSI and SATA hard disk controllers, several virtual network cards and sound cards, virtual serial and parallel ports and an Input/Output Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller (I/O APIC), which is found in many modern PC systems. This eases cloning of PC images from real machines and importing of third-party virtual machines into VirtualBox."

So then since there is no difference, I'll move back to PATA

Now all v-drives are on PATA (IDE controller)
And v-CD (ISOs) is one on PATA

I'll see later if I need more than one CD at the time, I'll set up a SATA drive.

For now, using PATA, my guest seams stable.
I'll update widow and then make a backup-copy before trying Kaspersky.
