Suse-12.1 64b Host / XP SP2 guest = VB crashes when XP updat
Hi,
The title says it,
I have Suse 12.1 64bits that runs pretty well on my laptop (Intel T7500; M965 chipset; 4GB RAM; 128MB video)
My VM is set to 1536 RAM , and 32meg of Video.
No IO APIC, no EFI, no UTC clock, no absolute pointing device (tried with and without)
the .vdi file is set to be on /home/VB (as a specific separated partition in the SSD table) of 55 GB
The Virtual disk itself is partitioned in 3 separate virtual partition as:
C:\ is on 45GB of the virtual disk, T:\TEMP is on 6GB of the VD and S:\pagefile.sys (Swap) is on 4GB
XP SP2 (the CD I have) installs and runs just fine .... until it tells me about the 69 updates it has to load up, including the SP3.
craches, craches, no matter what I try
I've downloaded the SP3 to install it locally, so I can shut down the network as I've shut down the sound, the shared folders, the 3D, the USB, the CD, the GuestAddition, the this and the that,
But still craches.
And now it craches just by opening it and leave it idle for like 5 minutes :(
What's wrong ?

Just the newest log will do. Zip it if it is too big to post as an attachment otherwise.

From the looks of the log, VirtualBox is not the one that is unhappy. I suspect it has to do with your unique partitioning on the SDD, but it appears to be the guest that is having this fit.
Can you define what you mean by crashes? Be exact please.
Also can you boot in safe mode on the guest?

Re: Suse-12.1 64b Host / XP SP2 guest = VB crashes when XP u
This only "unique partitioning" is for the VirtualBox partition
All the remaining of my two SSD are duly partitioned, like 512k for boot, 6G for swap, 8G for root, 8G for /usr, 8G for /var, 6G for /tmp, 19G for /widow and 11G for /home
And then about 45G for /virtualbox, mounted as /home/VB
I certainly can log in safe mode, since I can log in normal mode. I will see if it shut down after a while as well and then ?
The crash are like it opens and runs (most of the time) and then shut the guest window, saying "aborted" in the VB manager

In the storage section of the guest did you set the SDD enabled?
Also did you install the VirtualBox.org version or the one from the suse repo?

The one from the Oracle repo (well, first Dow--ed from Oracle and then added the repo)
The SSD is not ticked, but even when it is it doesn't change a thing (I don't know what it's supposed to change)

Does it stay running in safe mode?
Look in the guests event viewer and see if Windows records an error.

ooops
I've deleted the disk ... I knew I shouldn't have click on that button
OK, I'll reinstall and try to run safe mode to see if it hangs
I really appreciate your help, but since I'm currently in France, I've to live with the French time, so ... good night, I'll resume tomorrow

Re: Suse-12.1 64b Host / XP SP2 guest = VB crashes when XP u
Right,
Still at work, but I've DL a more recent version of the XP, with integrated SP3.
I went through several updates from the widow update website, which worked quite well, except for the heavy ones like the .net4 update.
It looks like my config can't handle heavy *disk access* work or something. But I'm not convinced as we would then be quite a bunch having such problem.
I'm thinking about upgrading to 8GB RAM, but I have to put about 150euros in and I'm not quite ready for that, so ... meanwhile, I'll keep trying to have it working the way it is. After all, it's only XP, I mean it's not like I'm running an ERP in it or anything (well, as a matter of fact, I'm not even running anything in it to make it crashe)
I will do a second VM in VB to re-load the XP SP2 from yesterday in a way to go through that problem to the solution.

Re: Suse-12.1 64b Host / XP SP2 guest = VB crashes when XP u
I've created a new VM, with a XP SP3.
It is running very slow, but at least updates are not systematically making it crashing ("aborted" as the VB manager call it)
Yesterday eve' I've tryed to install BlackBerry manager from my CD. No way, to long, it freez and hung even before starting the install.
I've then created an ISO image to avoid using the phyisical CD and avoid the CD reader.
I've managed to go a bit further into th install process, but it's soooo slow !! I have to stop doing anything else to make sure it doesn't hang and crash.
Finaly, I've managed to go through the install set up and hit the "install" button before going to bed.
This morning, the VB has crashed again ... (or is "aborted" as the VBM calls it)
I gave a look at the log, and something's strange here : I've set the "Vt-x and nested paging" on, but the machine says it's disabled or unavailable.
The log is attached.

Code: Select all
HWACCM: No VT-x or AMD-V CPU extension found. Reason VERR_VMX_MSR_LOCKED_OR_DISABLEDEither enable it in bios or find what ever is using it.

I have no idea what that is, but I will check / look for it and then log off to tweak the bios.
Will be back in a bit ...
