Just figured this one out, at least on my system: when you install SQL Server 2008 (and R2) on Windows 7 it is often configured to without TCP/IP as a connection protocol enabled. Without that you might be able to "browse" for the server, but you can't connect to it.
To fix this, on your host go to Start->Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2->Configuration Tools->SQL Server Configuration Manager. Under "SQL Server Network Configuration" select "Protocols for <instance name>" where <instance name> is the name of your database instance. On the right hand side you'll probably see "TCP/IP" with a status of "Disabled". Right click on "TCP/IP" and click "Enable". Then restart the SQL Server service for your instance - that's SQL Server Services in the left hand pane, select your instance, right click and click "Restart".
Hope this helps!

I may well be piping in a little late on this one seeing as it was raised back in 2012.
Have you checked that Named Pipes and TCP/IP have been enabled under SQL Server Configuration Manager - SQL Server Network Configuration - Protocals for XXXX(Being Instance)
