No audio from guest

I use a windows7 64bit host for VBox. I built a Windows7 guest for test purposes. It built fine and I can log in and do functions as expected but I don't have any audio from the guest. The audio is set for Intel HD Audio. I've tested the audio on my Host machine and it works fine. I also have an ubuntu guest and it doesn't work either. It's audio is set for ICH AC97.

Sorry - Forgot the VBox release informaiton. Using Version 4.1.16 r78094

I appreciate your suggestions.

perryg,

I just got back to looking at this problem. where do I find the guest's logs? BTW I have a winxp, win7, and an ubumtu guest built on this virtualbox machine and none of them seem to be able to get the audio through the VBox interface although the do say that the device is working properly.

TIA

Post the guests log file (as an attachment)
See Online Users Manual for the location of the file.

Perry,

Sorry I've taken so long to get back. I've been working other, non-related troubles.

I'm attaching three files for the three VM machines I run on this host.

TIA,
Brian

Are you accessing these guest local or by remote?

Perhaps you can post something else. Using the Windows 7 guest.
From the hosts terminal/command window type VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use " " if the name has a space in it.

Note if the host is Windows you need to be in the directory that has VBoxManage.exe for the command to work.

Perry,

Note I used uwin to extract the information so it is in a unix format.

You don't need to convert anything. I can read it all. ;-)

Your W7 audio config
  • Audio: enabled (Driver: DSOUND, Controller: AC97)
My W7 audio config
  • Audio: enabled (Driver: PulseAudio, Controller: HDA)
Now Since I use Linux for host the PulseAudio will be different than yours but the HDA should be the same in the guest.
By default IIRC Windows-7 does not have AC97 drivers.

Perry,
Just finished putting the bandage on my foot  !! All is well, after I read your response I started looking around my host box and found that the levels were down for the VM boxes. Turned them up and all three VMs now work. BTW I did change the audio device to HDA. I think I had it that way originally but in my shotgun approach I'd tried changing it.

Thanks, appreciate your time and assistance.
