Problem with Puppy Linux guest

Hello all
I have been trying Slacko Puppy as a guest in VirtualBox under WinXP and PCLinuxOS hosts. The virtual machine I created for the installation was 512Mb RAM, 64Mb Video memory, 2Gb virtual disk size.
The installation went ok, and I can now boot Puppy from VBox. There is a big problem in that the mouse cursor will not move over the whole of the puppy window. The mouse will only move over about 1/3 of the window, moving outside these limits causes the mouse pointer to jump out of the Puppy window to the XP or PCLos desktop. Possibly installing the guest additions would fix this, but after about half an hour of trying, I was informed that gcc and make were not available. I am unable to check in the repo because either the mouse pointer will not let me open the menus, or if I can actually do this then the software installer does not open. In fact, clicking or double clicking on most of the desktop icons does not open anything.
I am not sure whether this is a VBox or Puppy problem so I am posting to both.
Can anyone advise ?

You have three options I think:
1) Find the key combinations in Puppy to start a terminal, give Puppy focus, use key to get a terminal, install gcc, make, linux kernel headers etc and then install guest additions; OR
2) Move the pointer on and off at the side/top/bottom until the 'real' pointer and guest pointer agree well enough to let you install the dependencies and guest additions; OR
3) As you have PUEL, shut Puppy down, enable remote desktop for the Puppy guest in VBox, connect to that from your terminal services client on the host then install the dependencies and guest addition.

I think 3) would be easiest, but 2) works too (I have done it).

Hope this helps.
