fatal error installing Windows XP on 10.5.2 host

Forgive me if this topic has been covered. Haven't found it anywhere though.

When going through a Windows XP sp2 installation on a Mac OS X 10.5.2 host, I'm getting a fatal error form the Windows setup that I can't figure out. The error says, "Fatal error: One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed. The parameter is incorrect." That's all it tells me. Doesn't say which component is being installed.

At first I thought it was some setting I had set that maybe was not fully supported yet. So I deleted my vm and hard drive image and started from scratch, using nothing but the default settings, except to automatically capture the CD drive. Still getting the same error.

I haven't tried with any other versions of Windows yet. This is my first attempt. Am I doing something wrong? Host machine is a 20" alum iMac. All the latest software updates are installed.

Thanks,
Chris

I'm not sure, but I think the Windows XP CD is corrupt, at least i can remember such thing happened to me before and the CD was defect.

i'm having the same problem and i know the CD is not defective. but it is an corporate install version... and i'm wondering if that's the problem. i'll try a standard professional xp CD and see if that makes a difference.

I had this same problem. If I looked at the details of the "incorrect parameter" it was trying to find D:\i386\asms. I opened a command prompt by pressing Shift-F10 in the XP installer and changed directories to d:\i386\asms. All looked well. At this point I suspected a scratched disc or some media problem so I burned a fresh copy of the disc. This is a volume license copy of XP SP2. This also failed with the same error. I then took the ISO of the XP SP2 disc that I had just burned and mounted it as a CD. I tried the install again and this time it went through just fine, so it seemed to have a problem with the volume license (not sure if that is relevant) XP cd. It did work fine with the image though. Hope that helps and hope that bug gets fixed!

i ended up using nLite to make a slimmer image, and i've found that worked really well. but i suspect the real reason it worked has to do with your observation of iso image vs real CD.

thanks.

I had the same error when using Virtualbox 3.0.0.

I tried checking the "Enable passthrough" option for the CD-ROM and then the install completed without problems.

I had the same issue with a win XP disc, enabling the pass through option fixed it for me as well.

I also had this issue with 10.6.2 and a number of corporate XP CDs that were known good. Enabling pass through cured it. Thanks to all those that contributed a reply to this.

I have search and search, where is the "pass through" option set? I have the asms problem and can not install under 10.6.3
