Tried to update, but received the following:
-------------
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Windows 7.
Failed to load VMMR0.r0 (VERR_NO_MEMORY).
Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component: Console
Interface: IConsole {1968b7d3-e3bf-4ceb-99e0-cb7c913317bb}
-------------
Any suggestions?

You need to post the guests log file (as an attachment)

I have the same problem, I downgraded to 4.1.4 to avoid this problem.
There is another thread reporting the same issue, " 10.5.8 + 4.1.16 r78094 = out of memory?"

Yep, and the participants in that thread seem equally reluctant to provide basic required information.

To Whom,
I would like to see if I can help expedite a solution to this issue. I am experiencing a similar if not exact situation to many others and rather than downgrade to an older version would like to submit some (hopefully relevant and helpful) information.
I am running Mac OSX 10.6 (64bit os) on an dual quad core zeon with 8 gig of ram. I updated to VirtualBox 4.1.16 r78094 and rebooted host. Trying to start a vm results in:
"Failed to open a session for the virtual machine LTSP-Ubuntu.
Failed to load VMMR0.r0 (VERR_NO_MEMORY).
Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component: Console
Interface: IConsole {1968b7d3-e3bf-4ceb-99e0-cb7c913317bb}"
This happens with the rest of my vm's the only change in error is the name of the vm.
Version of VirtualBox is 4.1.16 r78094. I was not able to successfully boot a vm to install guest additions.
Host is Mac Pro dual quad core Xeon based cpu with 8 gigabytes of RAM running OSX 10.6 (64 bit)
Activity Monitor reports 5.71 GB free and the guest is Ubuntu (12.04) 64 bit set to use 1024 MB.
See attached guest log file.
Please let me know if there is any more information I can provide and I will gladly comply. Thanks and have a great day.
