Which log file should I consult

Hi,
I'm running an Ubuntu 11.10 guest on an OSx host (Snow Leopard). If something made both Ubuntu and my host stop responding completely (i.e. locked in a frozen Ubuntu), in which log file should I be able to find the cause?
Everything froze when I was working in an Ubuntu terminal, reading a file using emacs -nw. The file was created by very small and basic perl program I was playing with.
The only way I could get out, was by holding down the power button of my MackBook Pro for a couple of seconds. After restarting OSX and next Ubuntu, I ran the perl program again, without ending up in the same mess. So I can't blame it on shoddy code. I searched on both OSx and Ubuntu for a log file that would tell me what happened, but found nothing.
Kind regards,
Henri
