I'm getting the following message when I try to update the guest additions:
error 800b0110 el certificado no es valido para el uso solicitado
(Error 800b0110 the certificate is not valid for request)
I'm using the version 4.1.16

You need administrator rights to install device drivers (which is what the GAs mostly are). Google for how to configure Windows to ignore or prompt after certification errors, rather that simply refuse to install it.

I am trying to install the guest additions on a virtual machine with Windows XP home.

Yes, you are installing them in Windows XP. Therefore you are using the Windows installer program, not using VirtualBox directly. The problem is a Windows XP installer problem and you will find information about it on Google if you search on the Windows installer error code. It appears to usually come up when you try to re-install XP.
