Guest Additions 4.1.16 lost after reboot (Ubuntu 12.04)

I just upgraded VirtualBox from 4.1.14 to 4.1.16 today. My Ubuntu 12.04 guest booted fine with the 4.1.14 additions installed, then I installed the 4.1.16 additions. I logged out and back in and everything was working fine. I shut down the guest, and later when I started it back up it was running in a 1024x768 window and I my mouse disappears when moved into the guest window. I install the guest additions again and it was fine again, so I rebooted to make sure they stuck. When it restarts it's back to the 1024x768 window and no mouse.

I usually don't shut down or reboot the guest system, I save the state and restore it, but even that is broken. After installing the guest additions, if I close VirtualBox and save the machine state, when I restore it, the guest screen turns dark purple and is unreadable. I think I'll hold off on upgrading the guest additions on my other guest systems.

Suppose you clone the VM current state (full clone), does the clone behave the same way?

I saved the state and closed the main Ubuntu 12.04 system, cloned it and the clone behaves the same way it's restarted. I've discovered some more strange behaviors with the 4.1.16 additions:
  • After a restart, even though it boots up to a 1024x768 screen, the mouse works on the login screen. It's not until after I log in that the mouse disappears. The mouse is being captured by the guest, it still works and I can click things, I just can't see it.
  • The purple screen doesn't happen every time I restore the session, but since I noticed the login screen seems to have less problems, I found that if I lock the user session and chose to switch user to go back to the login screen, it seems to work every time upon restoring the session.
  • Today I had to restart Ubuntu after some updates, and I discovered that if I log in, then log out, the guest additions start working. I did this several times and it worked every time
I've verified that the VirtualBox service is running by switching to a console and logging in there before logging in to X, and the VBoxService is running. My other Linux guests are still running fine with the 4.1.14 additions, but one is now wanting to download a kernel update which means I will have to re-install the VirtualBox guest additions.

Same issue for me. After restarting guest tools stop working, no mouse scroll and no window stretch or fullscreen.

I'm having the same problem (or at least a similar one). I've been using Guest Additions 4.1.16 under Ubuntu 12.04 ever since it was released, and it has worked fine. But today I installed some Ubuntu updates (which included a kernel update), and now I'm having the issues mentioned in this thread. I tried reinstalling Guest Additions, but that did not fix it. The video resolution won't update when I switch to full-screen mode. I tried changing the resolution manually, but the highest resolution I can pick is 1600 x 1200, whereas I was formerly running in 1900 x 1200.

I'm not sure if this is a problem with the Ubuntu updates or Guest Additions. I'm posting this here and on an Ubuntu forum hoping someone in the know in either place will have an idea on how to fix it.

Thanks.

The guest additions are the usual cause of this issue. Since you say you installed them again I would now look at the auto-resize and make sure it is still enabled.
host+G toggle of look in the view tab.

Thanks for the reply. The host+G "Auto-resize Guest Display" option is disabled. I suspect this is not a good sign! :)

Yes it is. This means the guest additions failed to install.
Try again and watch the terminal for errors.

Well, it seems to be working now. I went into Ubuntu's Additional Drivers settings dialog and discovered that the Guest Additions display driver was deactivated. I re-activated it and restarted the virtual machine, and now it works.

Thanks for your help!
