Win2K guest takes "ages" to login with latest releases of VB

Post by ljeancler »

In fact every VirtualBox releases after the 4.1.8 version have the same problem (and it seems related to the guest additions too)

Boot sequence is fine until first login window is displayed with the message "Preparing network connections...". I must wait 3/5 minutes in order to access the "true" login window (with user and password textboxes)

I've also noticed several errors in my event log on my host system (Win7 Ultimate SP1, core i7 920@2.8Ghz, 12Gb RAM, VT-x activated) related to "0-Win2K" which is my guest system :
Level: Error
Source: browser
EventId: 8003
Error Message (direct translation with google from a french message): "The master browser has received a server announcement from the computer 0-WIN2K who thinks he is the master browser on the field for transport NetBT_Tcpip_ {BA435108-1AE9-47C7-A589-C7839F88AED8}. The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced."

Guest Information:
Name=0-Win2K
System=MS Windows 2000
RAM=768Mb
Chipset=PIIX3
IO-APIC=True
CPU=1
Allocated resources=100%
PAE/NX=True
VT-X=True
Nested-pagination=True
Display RAM=96Mb
Display Monitor=1
2D Acceleration=True
IDE-Controller=PIIX4
Disk size=6Gb on primary master
Sound active=true
Sound Driver=Windows Direct Sound
Audio Controller=ICH AC97
Network adapter=PCnet-FAST III (Nat)
1 shared folder

So I've downgraded to 4.1.8 with the corresponding guests additions and my Win2K virtual machine is booting and displaying the login window quite fast ("Preparing network connections" taking only few seconds) and no more Event log errors in host OS.

Do you have any advices ? Because I'm also playing with Win8 Consumer Preview and new VB releases have a better support for that system (WDDM driver).

Sorry for my english (not my mother tongue)

The message about browser elections is pretty common with Windows networking. What network option are you using for your guest? Does the guest have multiple NICs? Any other network problems?

I have no network problems with my win2k guest OS and with my win7 host.

Everything is working fine (I'm only using basic internet access with my network).

The only problem is the time (3 to 5 min) required to display the login window on the guest os and the browser events in my host os eventlog with VBox versions after 4.1.8 when I'm login into the guest (1/2 events by login).

I don't have any specific network configuration on my guest and on the host that I'm aware of (both are pretty fresh installs)

I have the same issue with Windows 2000. Without the guest additions installed it boots normally, but with the guest additions installed there is a 1.5 minute delay at the Preparing Network Connections screen. I am using VirtualBox 4.1.18 and I can confirm the problem is also present in 4.1.16.

I do not see any errors in the event log on the host or the guest.

Host: Windows 7 x64 SP1, Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 CPU, 8GB RAM
Guest: Windows 2000 Professional clean install with default VirtualBox options except for 512 MB RAM. VT-x is enabled.

Same problem with latest release of guest additions and vbox 4.1.18 with a Windows 2000 Server guest on Windows 7 host. After additions the network connections phase is 90 seconds.
