Identically Named USB Devices

Post by svbhvman »

I have two USB devices, USB HASP keys to be exact, that have the exact same name (AKS HASP HL 3.25 [0325]) in the VM's "Devices > USB Devices" menu. They are actually different, from different manufacturers, and need attached to different VMs. Is there any way of renaming them or modifying their properties so that they appear different from one another in the "Devices > USB Devices" selection dropdown? That way I can tell which one to attach to which VM? In the past, I have had to remove one and attache the other to the current VM but this required pulling the PC out from under the desk to access the back where the HASPs are plugged in. Please don't respond with variations of this solution like "just get a USB multiport adapter and put it where it is easily accessible". These suggestions are just "work arounds" not a solution at all to the real underlying problem.

Thanks,

The strings you mention are read from the device - it's not something you can configure with VirtualBox. Often the USB details will include a serial number, which is how you distinguish two like devices. If the manufacturer hasn't set a serial number then there's not a lot you can do.

You should contact the manufacturer of those devices to see if the device signatures can be modified.
