Windows Vista SP2 x86 Guest: Aero Graphic glitches...

Post by FerchogtX »

Hi there community!!!

I've been using VirtualBox since 2 years more or less, I must say is my favourite virtualization solution, clean, fast, reliable, and has tons of options.

Since 4.1 branch, I?m very excited about Aero support (AKA WDDM drivers) and I've tried several times, but here it comes my issue, I generally use an XP VM, nice guest, and it allows me to use some legacy hardware I have on my laptop... I wanted to install a Vista Guest, is a x86 home premium, but the issue is that Aero has graphic glitches whenever I enable it...

Basically, I isntall Vista, then my Guest additions, but when trying to enable Aero, guest screen flickers and does garbage everywhere, so I need to disable Aero to see the screen back to normal :( The sad part is that I tried VMware Player 4.0.3, and the same gust work perfectly with Aero enabled (of course, created with it and using its own tools)

Is there any way I can see Aero working in VirtualBox? I really like Vbox because its lightweight and clean (VMWare runs some extra services by default un automatic even when not used, and im resource paranoid)...

My system Specs:
Laptop Acer Aspire 4535
500 GB Seagate 7200.4 Momentus (C:\ 60 GB, D:\ 430 GB aprox, Vbox is installed here at D:\Programs\Oracle\VirtualBox)
4 GB DDR2 RAM (3.75 Usable)
256 MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3200 With 8.653 version drivers
AMD Athlon X2 QL-65 2.1 Ghz
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium x64 with SP1
VirtualBox v4.1.14 (Latest build) with latest Guest additions

Guest Settings:
1 GB RAM
40 GB HDD (SATA)
128 MB VGA (With 2d and 3d accel enabled)
Windows Vista Home Premium x86 SP2
No floppy or serial ports (Not needed)
Rest at default settings

Weird enough, in my desktop, VirtualBox goes just fine with same guest settings, tested the same version and the system is:
PCChips A13G+ MoBo
4 GB RAM DDR2 667 Mhz
160 GB Maxtor Diamond Max 10 SATA II 7200 RPM
512 MB ATI Radeon HD 4350 with driver version 8.741
AMD Athlon 64 X2 +5200 2.7 Ghz (Brisbane)
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium x64 (No SP1 yet)
VirtualBox v4.1.14 (Latest build) with latest Guest additions

Maybe is something related to my driver version (someone here suggested tu update) but since my primary is a laptop and is said that updating drivers in a laptop without being the originals that came with it, can cause hardware issues or damage, I cannot do it... and is just weird that VMware can actually emulate aero with that drivers but not VirtualBox... of not, I?m not comparing since Vbox has another way of handling stuff and is a completely different software.

My question is if I can do something to get aero working on that laptop. I know that this support is still experimental so if this need to wait for new updates that solve this issues, I can wait ;)

Thanks in advance for your kind help

See Ya!!!

P.S. Can I join into asking for parallel port support? I know it can be complicated as far as I read on the forum before, but I would just love to get rid of my dual boot with XP in my desktop so I can use my old CanosCan N340P on VirtualBox without switching OSes... No pressure of course ;)
