Trouble running game

I know VM's aren't meant to run games but it works for a friend of mine so I'm just curious why it doesn't run for me. I successfully installed the OS (windows xp) and initially got a blue screen when I attempted to run the game. Later, I installed the guest additions and I don't get a blue screen now but it just randomly shuts down before the game window opens. This happens somewhere around the part where the gameguard is supposed to pop up at the bottom right of the taskbar. I'm not sure if it's a gameguard issue but no error pops up relating to the gameguard. Anyway, as the VB "restarts", it says windows was not shut down properly.

I did everything exactly as my friend did and my settings for the VB were exactly the same... can someone tell me what I did wrong or maybe what I can do to solve this mysterious issue?

You need to enable 2D and 3D support, and install the Guest Additions while the guest OS runs in safe mode. That's all you can do. It isn't that you can't or aren't supposed to run games in a VM, it's that games make heavy demands and it's hit or miss whether they'll work or not. Usually not.

I'm having a bit of problems running the guest additions in safe mode on my windows 7. When I click install guest additions, nothing happens... is there something else I need to do?

If you click on install guest additions and nothing happens you then open the file manager and look at the CD. Start the setup from there.

Sorry could you be a bit more specific, I'm new with this program. Do I open the file manager while the VB is still running? And what exactly do you mean by "look at the CD"?

When you select the option to install the guest additions VirtualBox attached the CD image containing them to the CD drive in the vm. Normally the CD then autoruns.

"Look at the CD" means look as the CD drive from within the OS in the virtual machine. What else could it mean? You do know how to run a program from a CD? You do know that the guest additions are installed into the OS running in the vm?
