A few things to try and see what happens.
- 1) try to see if save and resume also brings the link back.
2) if not static verify the guest has not expired it DHCP lease.
3) make sure that it is the link that is down and not a specific protocol.
4) If streaming is all you do then check to see if the streaming is causing a buffer issue in the guest.
5) see if you can you reach the guest by any means while it is acting up

Hi Perryg,
Thank you for your response. I apologize for the delay but I was on vacation a while back and then have just been busy.
1) try to see if save and resume also brings the link back.
Do you mean 'Pause' the VM and then resume? The last time I did that the guest OS (SBS 2011) freaked out. I think because as far as the guest is concerned the time suddenly changed, but I'm not sure. Is 'Pause' always safe to do? I'm hesitant to try again.
2) if not static verify the guest has not expired it DHCP lease.
Both guest and host have a static IP.
3) make sure that it is the link that is down and not a specific protocol.
I'm not sure how to accomplish this. Mostly because of my answer to #5 below.
4) If streaming is all you do then check to see if the streaming is causing a buffer issue in the guest.
I'm not sure how to check such a thing but this problem manifests itself in other ways as well. For example, I have a script setup to check for response to an http request and email me if there is no response. I'll often get emails that such-and-such a thing is offline when in fact it isn't. This also tells me this problem occurs for both incomming and outgoing http requests.
5) see if you can you reach the guest by any means while it is acting up
I can't make an attempt fast enough. The guest is reachable almost if not immediately after I notice the issue.
Additional Information:
I have also been experiencing problems with a USB device that I have attached to the guest. This also occurs after the VM has been running for a while. So I don't know if a hardware virtualization issue or if this is a higher level problem.
I have 2 virtual processors assigned to this VM. I have read, after setting up the VM, that some report SBS 2011 running better with only 1 virtual processor. I do know SBS 2011 runs terribly on 3 and 4 virtual processors. Can anyone confirm SBS 2011 should run on only 1 virtual processor?
I never installed Guest Additions. I figured the less the better. Is this foolish? Should all guest OSs have Guest Additions installed? Could this be the cause of my problems?
Thank you for your continued support.

Yes I have also seen this. Try with one and see if it is better.

The host and guest time sync will not work if the guest additions are not installed. This also could be a factor.
