Locking up at logon screen

XP Host, XP Guest. Will boot into safe mode. When starting normally after inserting control-alt-del and logon prompt comes up, the guest locks up with a red line across the top of the screen. Any ideas?

Well today the Guest powered up and gave the Windows has recovered from a serious error message, so I guess it is working. I have no idea what happened but thx for wanting to help
