Hi there
I've just installed VB, created a new virtual disk and was trying to install windows 7 (home premium) from a DVD drive. Installation simply crashes after a few seconds. I'm on a mid 2010 macbokpro, with OS 10.6.8
Any idea what's wrong?
Thanks a lot

Re: Unable to perform windows 7 instalation on virtualdisk
It looks like your Mac host has a 32bit kernel, and you are trying to assign too much RAM to the guest. Try assigning 2GB or less (my own WIn7-64 guest runs well with 1.5GB).
Re: Unable to perform windows 7 instalation on virtualdisk
I assigned just under 2 gb and it worked fine. Thanks again.
Re: Unable to perform windows 7 instalation on virtualdisk
Hi mpack, any ideia why the 32-bit kernel is being used? The processor is 64 bit, shouldn't Vb be able to use the 64 kernel?

Re: Unable to perform windows 7 instalation on virtualdisk
It isn't VirtualBox that chooses a kernel, it's you! VirtualBox runs with whatever it finds.
I'm not a Mac user, but I believe the choice of 32bit vs 64bit is made at boot time (both are installed), presumably according to system defaults. I believe there's a keyboard override (something like function 6 4) to force 64bit, but you should google for that. No doubt there is also a way to change the boot time default.

Thanks a lot again!! Didn't even know my computer was running on 32, while it could be on 64.

I'm having the same problem (OS 10.6.8; Windows 7), but changing to 2 gigs didn't help. Here's what I see:
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Windows 7 Professional.

Re: Unable to perform windows 7 instalation on virtualdisk
@GeneA,
Run the Repair Disk Permissions using DIsk Utility on your MAC host then it should work.Failed to load VMMR0.r0 (VERR_SUPLIB_WORLD_WRITABLE).

Re: Unable to perform windows 7 instalation on virtualdisk
You have a 64bit host kernel, so not the same problem.GeneA wrote:I'm having the same problem (OS 10.6.8; Windows 7), but changing to 2 gigs didn't help. Here's what I see:
