How do I boot in Safe Mode

v4.1.14 running on new macbook pro, with winxp sp3 guest. I can't get my Win XP guest to boot into safe mode - so that I can then install Guest Additions.
F8 on my mac keyboard does nothing as the guest boots up. I've checked that the kb is set to have fn keys work normally - which they are, I need to use fn key to access the special functions. But Win XP simply ignores F8 and boots normally.
How can I get into safe mode please!
Thanks.

fn+F8 gives access to the 'special' function of that key - in this case, it opens up iTunes (presumably because F8 has a Play/Pause symbol on it).
So I've set them to behave as 'normal' which should mean F8 at bootup = opportunity for safe mode. But no...

The main reason I want to install GA is because I think it might give me better graphics quality - is this true?! Presently, I have only 800x600, 1024x768 and 1152x864 res available, and viewing it fullscreen on my second monitor, the graphics quality is poor. I'm hoping the GA might fix that.

With the XP guest running.
Go to Start, click on Run. In the box type msconfig and hit enter.
Click on the BOOT.INI tab, Check /SAFEBOOT save and restart.

Once GA are installed, reverse the above and reboot.
