understanding network

Post by melko »

im new to vbox. Can anyone explain to me what is the difference between the network settings in the preferences of the vbox and the network settings in the settings window. i find that the network address in the preferences window is 192.168.56.1 and its name is host only ethernet adapter although the network address assigned to the network card of the windows server installed on vbox is different and is nat??

You should read chapter 6 Virtual networking in your VirtualBox users guide first as it will more than likely answer you question.

The preferences -> network is *only* used for setting/changing the host-only adapter and is global.
For the actual network configuration you do that in the guests settings -> network and the section referred to 6.2 Introduction to networking modes explains the types and what they do.

Perhaps if you explain what you intend to do and what obstacles you are encountering are we could advise you as to what you need to do.
