I have a Ubuntu VM that runs fine and has a shared folder. But when I try the same process to set up a shared folder with the MontaVista VM, I get stopped.
The problem seems to be mounting the shared directory. When I try:
sudo mount -t vboxsf virtualboxshare /mnt/vboxshare
I get the error, "mount: unknown filesystem type 'vboxsf'"
The exact same command works fine on Ubuntu. What should I be doing differently on MontaVista?
I've already tried other filesystem types like UFS, NFS, and VFS, and I have also tried leaving off the filesystem type entirely; that gives a different error,
"mount: special device virtualboxshare does not exist"
Any suggestions?

VirtualBox shared folders requires installation of the Guest Additions. MontaVista is not a supported guest, so I'm curious if you attempted to install the Linux GAs?

Yes, I've installed the Guest Additions, that's how I got the Ubuntu guest VM sharing to operate. But evidently the MontaVista distro requires a different step. That why I am hoping someone might have some clues for me.

As I said, MontVista is not a supported guest. It also doesn't seem to be a fork of a supported guest. It's also obscure, so I'd be surprised if you get much help from other users. Perhaps you should try a Samba share instead.
